Pallet of Fish appeal continues

Calais Food Collective (CFC) are in desperate need of more tinned fish to help feed the communities they support.

In December, CFC reached out to CamCRAG for our help, and we launched our appeal to raise £1500 to buy a pallet of 4000 tins of sardines for CFC to distribute in Calais. Thanks to the success of our Winter Fair and online fundraising, we were able to buy a pallet of sardines which our partners, Care4Humanity, took to Calais on January 16th.

However, that was only enough fish for one month of distributions – more is needed. Particularly at this time of year when it is so cold, protein is very important for the welfare of migrants and refugees sleeping rough in the area. We have agreed to fund a further 3,500 tins of sardines in tomato sauce. These will be bought locally in Calais to avoid the problems posed by crossing the Channel.

Please donate whatever you can to enable us to buy another 3,500 tins of fish for CFC to distribute to refugees in Calais.

This is the appeal we received from CFC:

Calais Food Collective is in urgent need of support with material donations for the winter.

In the past few months a number of avenues for food donations which CFC relied upon have dried up, and the Collective is now largely relying on grant money, mostly from l’Auberge des Migrants and Help Refugees. This is a short-term solution which cannot form a sustainable base for the project, but even while donations from the Collective’s parent organisations are coming in, it is still only enough to cover the base necessities (i.e. onions, rice, tomatoes etc.) and not enough to cover ‘non-essential’ items like tinned fish and tea. These items are hugely popular among the communities we serve and the nutritional value of tinned fish (protein, fats, calcium, omega 3) is particularly important in the winter months.

CFC is reaching out to CamCRAG to request a sponsor of tinned sardines, a favourite amongst the communities we serve.
