Ollie volunteered on his first CamCRAG convoy to Calais in September 2021. Read more about our convoys and how you can apply on our convoys page.
“I was quite nervous as I didn’t know anyone on the convoy before going, but everyone was so friendly and welcoming I felt at home right away. We weren’t sure what to expect when it came to crossing the border in terms of covid rules, so it was a relief when we crossed without much bother at all.
When we arrived in Calais we were all were pretty hungry so we went out for a meal and a few drinks, it was a great opportunity to get to know everyone and relax before a hard days work the next day. It was also nice that at all the restaurants we went to our vaccine passports were checked.
We spent both days working in the warehouse, it definitely felt like our help was really appreciated by the long term volunteers, we were always busy doing tasks from sorting clothes to putting up and taking down tents. The warehouse had a really nice atmosphere to it and it was great getting to know the long term volunteers while doing tasks.
During lunchtime we took the opportunity to experience some French cuisine, this included some incredible cakes from the boulangerie, and the largest portion of frites I’ve ever seen from the friterie!
After a hard days work in the warehouse on Saturday, we went out in Calais for a nice meal and some of us soaked up the Calais nightlife! It was a fun night that ended at a Frenchman’s 30th birthday party!
All in all, I had a fantastic weekend and cannot wait for the next convoy!”
