Ella, who has recently joined CamCRAG’s fundraising team, went on her first CamCRAG convoy to Calais in February.
At the end of February CamCRAG volunteers were back in Calais, this time 21 of us, both newbies like me and convoy old timers.
The sun was shining as we embarked on a weekend of supporting the long term warehouse volunteers. Our main activities included building new storage, sorting blankets, and checking tents. On Saturday evening a surprisingly large number of the group even decided that a dip in the sea was just the way to relax after a long day’s work! By Sunday afternoon most of the group had opted to check tents in the sunshine before heading home after a productive weekend.
This was my first convoy and it was eye-opening to see for myself the hard work and logistical effort that goes into supporting refugees in Calais. There really is something different about being physically there rather than seeing it through a screen. While the situation in Calais and of refugees more widely can sometimes feel quite overwhelming, it was heartening to be among so many like-minded people opting to spend their weekend in the warehouse.
