Here are some common sense bits of advice.
The sleepout experience will give you a small taste of what it’s like to have to sleep out every night.
Think about all the things we take for granted. A locked door, a watertight roof. Warm, clean, dry beds.
Insulation from the sounds, smells and noises of the outside.
There will be others in your sleepout team around you; look after each other.
We think these things are essential:
⦁ Warm sleeping bag
⦁ Something insulating to sleep on
⦁ A way of keeping you and your sleeping bag dry in rain or snow
⦁ A warm coat
⦁ Thick socks
⦁ Extra jumper/top layer
⦁ Thermal base layers (such as long johns/leggings)
⦁ Gloves, hat and scarf
The following will be useful
⦁ Chocolate to share
⦁ Alcohol Gel
⦁ Hot water bottle
⦁ Extra socks
Do not sleep with any valuables, make sure they are locked away nice and safe.
Tips for keeping snug:
⦁ Have a warm drink before bed
⦁ Do not wear wet clothes
⦁ Avoid getting too hot; perspiration is your enemy
⦁ Add an extra layer if you start to feel cold in the night
⦁ Try to stay out of the wind and rain. If you cannot find shelter, use wood, cardboard or other available materials to build a shelter. This can be lined with tarpaulin on the outside to make it waterproof, and blankets or old clothes on the inside will help to keep the heat in.
⦁ Insulate yourself from the ground with a foam mat or flattened cardboard. Use a tarpaulin underneath
the mat to keep it dry.
⦁ Stay dry. Immediately remove any wet clothing as wet clothes can cause your body temperature to drop,
which can be very dangerous. Replace with dry clothing or wrap yourself in a dry blanket.
⦁ Drink hot fluids. Avoid drinking alcohol as it will lower your body temperature, which can be dangerous.
⦁ Eat plenty of food, especially those with high levels of starch (such as rice and potatoes) as these
provide lots of energy. You need energy to stay warm.
⦁ Wear layers of clothing. Make sure that these are loose as overheating will make you sweat. Sweating
will make you damp and then cold. Cover exposed parts of your body, such as your neck and ears, and
wear a warm hat. Warm dry feet quickly make your body feel warm, so try to wear two pairs of clean
